The phone fell, the screen cracked — the first reaction for most is to pick it up, see how bad it is, and start to panic. But data is more important than glass. Photos, messages, notes, apps — all of this can be lost not from the impact itself, but from incorrect actions afterward. That's why the first few minutes after a fall are crucial.
Why Your Data is at Risk
A broken screen isn't a catastrophe yet. An iPhone often continues to work with cracks: it receives calls, notifications come through. The problem starts when the touch sensor stops responding. The phone is alive, but you can't control it. Or worse — the impact hit a corner of the case and something happened inside.
We often see this scenario: someone brings in an iPhone 13 with a completely black screen, but the phone itself vibrates and makes sounds when buttons are pressed. The person carried it in their pocket for два дня, hoping it would 'fix itself,' and then tried to extract the data — but connecting to a computer was no longer possible because the phone won't allow trusting a device without unlocking. The data ended up locked along with the screen.
What to Do Immediately After a Fall — While the Phone Still Responds
If the touch sensor works even a little — don't waste time. Back up your data right now.
Via iCloud
- Make sure your phone is connected to Wi-Fi.
- Go to "Settings" → your name → iCloud → "iCloud Backup".
- Tap "Back Up Now" and wait for it to complete.
This will take from двух минут to получаса — depending on the amount of data and internet speed. The free iCloud storage (5 ГБ) might not be enough if you have many photos. In that case, either buy a bit more space (99 рублей per month for 50 ГБ), or use a computer.
Via Computer — Finder or iTunes
- Connect your iPhone to a Mac or Windows with a cable.
- A prompt "Trust This Computer?" will appear on the screen — tap "Trust".
- Open Finder (Mac) or iTunes (Windows) and click "Back Up Now".
A backup on your computer stores more data than iCloud — including app settings and message history from messengers. And it doesn't consume cloud storage.
When the Touch Sensor Doesn't Work at All
At this point, there's nothing you can do on your own. Unlocking an iPhone without a working screen is practically impossible — Face ID and PIN codes require interaction with the display. External keyboards via Lightning won't help either until the device is unlocked.
There was a case: an iPhone 12 mini was brought in — a crack across the entire screen, the touch sensor dead. The client had managed to enable Google Photos sync beforehand, so the photos were saved. But notes and WhatsApp messages remained inside. We replaced the display — after the replacement, the phone worked, and the data was preserved. Luckily, the impact didn't affect the internals. It can be different.
When You Definitely Need a Technician
- The touch sensor doesn't respond — you can't unlock it or make a backup.
- The phone won't turn on or immediately shuts off.
- The display flickers, the image is distorted, or there are lines across the screen.
- There's a burning smell from the case or the phone gets very hot.
In these cases, bring the phone to a service center immediately; don't experiment. Attempts to open an iPhone yourself or 'fix' it with makeshift tools most often result in permanent data loss — we see such cases regularly.
