A broken screen is not the end of the world
You dropped it and immediately realized: the glass is shattered. A familiar story. iPhone 12, 13, 14 Pro — it doesn't matter which model, dropping it from a meter onto tile floor does the exact same thing. The panic is understandable: your photos, messages, work documents, and contacts that aren't backed up anywhere else are all in there.
The good news: in most cases, the data survives even a severe impact. The logic board and flash storage are separate from the glass, and if the phone still functions even a little bit, the chances of saving everything are very high. The main thing is not to panic or make unnecessary moves.
Why data gets lost — and not right away
Most of the time, it's not because of the broken screen itself. Problems arise later — when the phone is dropped again, liquid gets inside during an attempted "cleaning," or it's taken apart at home with a screwdriver. We often see this: someone brings in an iPhone 13 with cracked glass that still works fine, and immediately mentions that they tried to replace the screen themselves after watching a YouTube tutorial before coming in. As a result, a flex cable is torn, and that's when real difficulties with data access begin.
Another typical scenario is a drained battery. The screen is broken, Face ID stops working, and the phone charges poorly through the damaged port. The client waits a week, the battery dies completely, and when they finally bring it in, the data is locked without the screen passcode. This is a completely different recovery scenario.
What to do right now while the phone is still alive
If the screen shows at least something and the phone responds to touch — act immediately, do not put it off until tomorrow.
- Plug it into a charger. Even if the port is slightly bent — try carefully. A powered phone means time to maneuver.
- Create an iCloud backup. Go to "Settings" — your name — iCloud — Backup — "Back Up Now". You will need Wi-Fi and available storage. If you don't have enough space — buy 50 GB for a month, it costs 99 rubles. Don't regret it.
- Sync via Finder or iTunes. Connect to your computer with a cable. Mac — Finder, Windows — iTunes. Click "Back Up Now". More reliable than the cloud: everything is saved locally to your drive.
- Copy photos manually. If the backup doesn't work — at least save your photos. On a computer, the iPhone appears as a camera, and the DCIM folder can be copied with a simple drag and drop.
An alternative option that few people know about: if the screen responds but there is no image at all — try a Lightning-to-HDMI adapter and an external monitor. Sometimes it works, takes five minutes, and you have nothing to lose.
When the screen doesn't respond at all
This is trickier, but not hopeless. If the phone turns on (you hear vibration, the indicator is on) but the screen is dead — connect it to a computer and wait for Finder or iTunes to detect it. If you have previously trusted this computer, the backup will be created without entering a passcode on the screen.
If it is not trusted — you need to unlock it blindly. Turn it on, swipe up, enter the passcode, and tap "Trust" on the computer prompt. It sounds intimidating, but many manage on the first or second try if they remember the layout of elements on the screen.
When you need a technician
If the phone shows no signs of life at all, is not recognized by the computer, or you have already tried all of the above — further experiments can only cause harm. Taking the phone apart yourself just to access the board without experience or tools is a bad idea. It's easy to tear a flex cable or damage connectors, and then data recovery turns into a separate, expensive ordeal.
We often see this picture: the data could have been saved earlier, but the client dragged their feet, the phone died and locked — and now it requires special equipment, time, and money. Don't wait too long.
