First thing you need to know: your contacts most likely haven't gone anywhere. Nine times out of ten, they're just hidden or stopped syncing. I know this from our practice at iClub.pro — we get these requests several times a week, especially after major iOS updates.

Most common scenario: someone opens Messages, sees "+7 923 555…" instead of a name — and panics. In reality, contacts from the Google account simply got disconnected. Or iPhone stopped showing one of the groups after an update.

First: check if all contact groups are enabled

Open "Phone" → "Contacts" → "Groups" (button in the top left corner). You'll see all connected accounts — iCloud, Google, Exchange, and others. Make sure each one has a checkmark.

Sounds trivial, but really saves the day. Saw a case with iPhone 15 Pro — someone lost about 400 contacts. Turned out after updating to iOS 17, the Google account checkmark disappeared on its own. Enabled it — everything came back.

Second: check account authorization

Go to "Settings" → "Contacts" → "Accounts". Look at each one — Gmail, Outlook, Exchange, work email. If it says "Account not authenticated" — tap it, re-enter your password. This happens more often than people think, especially after changing your Google password or enabling two-factor authentication.

Third: restart iCloud sync

If contacts were supposed to be stored in iCloud: "Settings" → your name → iCloud → find "Contacts", turn off the toggle. When asked — choose "Keep on iPhone". Wait 15 seconds, turn it back on. iPhone will start syncing again. Sometimes contacts come back in a minute, sometimes you need to wait longer — depends on the data volume.

Fourth: iCloud archive — not many people know about this 📋

Go to icloud.com from a computer → "Account Settings" → "Advanced" → "Restore Contacts". There will be archives for different dates — you can roll back to when contacts were still there. Important point: restoration will replace current contacts with archived ones. If you added someone new after the loss — first export the current list through a third-party app.

Unexpected observation from practice

A couple of times people came to us whose contacts "disappeared" after they accidentally signed out of Apple ID. iCloud contacts disappear instantly when this happens — and the person is sure they've lost everything forever. Sign back into Apple ID — and everything returns in seconds. Nobody thinks about this in a panic, but it's the first thing to check.

If nothing helped

Don't reset your iPhone to factory settings hoping it will "help". This almost never solves contact issues, but adds a headache with restoring everything else. Try contacting Apple Support through apple.com/support — they have access to the server side of your account, sometimes they can restore data directly. 📞
