Is your iPhone camera taking blurry photos: dirt, scratches, or something more serious?
Photos coming out blurry, lacking sharpness, or looking like they were taken through frosted glass — this is what people come to us with almost every day. The good news: in about half of the cases, the cause is trivial and can be fixed in thirty seconds. The bad news: the other half requires repair.
Why the camera suddenly started taking worse photos
Most often, one of three things is to blame.
Dirt or grease on the protective glass
On the iPhone 12 and newer models, there is no protruding lens over the camera — there is a flat piece of glass right in the body. It collects fingerprints, pocket lint, and hand cream residue. A light film of grease is enough to make the autofocus drift and photos look foggy. This is the most common cause that people ignore for months.
Scratches or cracks on the camera glass
The glass over the camera module is one of the most vulnerable parts of the device. This is especially true for the iPhone 11 and 12: it protrudes slightly and is the first thing to break during a drop. Small scratches cause glare and loss of contrast. A crack is a more serious issue; even thorough cleaning won't always fix it.
Damage to the lens or camera module itself
If the phone has been dropped, hit, or exposed to water, the lens inside the module may have shifted. Externally, the glass might look intact, but the photos are still blurry. We had an iPhone 13 Pro brought in after a fall from about a meter high. The glass was perfectly fine, but the main lens was shooting like someone with minus five diopters without glasses. It turned out the lens had shifted inside the module. A replacement solved the problem in a couple of hours.
What you can do yourself
- Wipe the camera glass. Use a soft, lint-free cloth — microfiber is best. Wipe in circular motions without applying pressure. No lotion-based wipes, no breathing on the glass — this leaves streaks.
- Remove the case. Cheap cases sometimes overlap the edge of the camera glass or put pressure on it. Take it off and take a test shot.
- Check in different apps. If the blurriness is only in Instagram but not in the standard Camera app, the problem is in the app settings, not the hardware.
- Restart your phone. Sometimes the autofocus freezes at the software level. It helps one time out of ten, but it's worth a try.
It happens to us like this: a client brings in an iPhone 14 complaining about blurry photos, and while I'm inspecting it, I just wipe the glass. We take a test shot — everything is sharp. The person leaves happy without spending a ruble. Honestly, this is not rare.
When you can't do without a technician
You've wiped it, checked in different apps, and restarted it, but the image is still blurry? Here are a few possibilities:
- there are visible scratches or micro-cracks on the glass — you need to replace the camera lens cover;
- the phone was dropped or exposed to water — the module might be damaged;
- the blurriness is only on one lens out of several: for example, the telephoto lens on an iPhone 15 Pro works fine, but the main one doesn't — this is definitely a hardware issue;
- photos are normal but videos are blurry, or vice versa — this indicates a malfunction of a specific sensor.
Replacing the camera lens cover usually costs from 1500 to 3000 rubles depending on the model and takes about an hour. Replacing the camera module is a different story; prices start from 4000–5000 rubles for the iPhone 12 and up, depending on the specific lens. We will provide an exact price after an inspection.
