MacBook charges only to 80% — is it a malfunction or normal?

We regularly get messages with this question: "I charged my MacBook overnight, in the morning it's at 80%, and nothing more." Or: "I plugged it in, two hours have passed, and it's still at 80%." It's easy to understand the confusion — it looks as if something is broken.

In fact, in most cases, there is no malfunction. The MacBook is working exactly as Apple intended.

Why charging stops at 80%

In macOS, there is a feature called "Optimized Battery Charging". It appeared several years ago and has been confusing owners of MacBook Air, MacBook Pro, and the new MacBook Neo ever since.

Here is how it works: the system monitors how you use your computer — when you plug it in, when you unplug it, and what your daily routine is. If macOS "realizes" that the MacBook will be plugged in for a long time, it intentionally pauses charging at 80% and waits until just before you are about to unplug the cable to top it up to 100%.

Why is this necessary? Lithium batteries degrade faster when they are kept at 100% charge for a long time while plugged in. If a MacBook stays plugged in for days on end — which is the case for many users — the battery wears out significantly faster. We see this in practice: 2019–2021 MacBooks that constantly ran on mains power without limits often come to us with 60–70% of their original capacity. For those where optimization was active, the picture is much better.

How to charge to 100% right now

This can be done in just two clicks, no need to dig into settings.

  1. Plug your MacBook into the charger.
  2. Click the battery icon in the menu bar at the top of the screen.
  3. Select "Charge to Full Now".

That's it. The MacBook will charge fully, regardless of what the system thinks about your schedule.

If your laptop usage is unpredictable — sometimes at home, sometimes on the go, without a set routine — you can do this regularly. The feature itself remains enabled; you just manually override it when needed.

How to disable optimized charging completely

If you want your MacBook to always charge to the maximum without manual intervention, you can disable the feature or change the limit.

  1. Open the Apple menu — "System Settings".
  2. Go to the "Battery" section.
  3. Click the (i) icon next to "Battery Health".
  4. Turn off the "Optimized Battery Charging" switch.

In the same menu, you can set the limit to 90% instead of 80% if 80% seems too conservative.

When it actually is a problem

There are cases when a MacBook is stuck at 80% for a completely different reason. Here is what you should pay attention to:

  • Optimization is disabled, but charging still doesn't go past 80% — this is no longer normal.
  • The MacBook doesn't react to the cable at all: the battery icon doesn't change, and the lightning bolt doesn't appear.
  • The computer heats up more than usual during charging.
  • The number of charge cycles has exceeded 1000, and the capacity has dropped below 70% of the original.

In these cases, the issue could be with the battery itself, the cable or adapter, or the charging controller on the board. We had a 14″ MacBook Pro 2021 come in with its charge "stuck" at 82%. It turned out the problem was with the MagSafe port: one of the contacts was oxidized, the current was unstable, and the system detected this and stopped charging prematurely. We cleaned the contacts, checked the cable, and everything worked.
