Just because it turns on doesn't mean everything is fine
Your phone fell into water, you dried it off, turned it on, and it seems to be working. But something is wrong. The screen flickers, the sound is gone, the touch sensor is unresponsive, Face ID doesn't recognize you, or the battery dies in a couple of hours. This is a classic story we hear at iClub all the time.
The problem is that water in a smartphone doesn't always kill it immediately. Sometimes the device continues to work, but gradual destruction is already happening inside. The iPhone casing is protected against splashes and brief immersion, but moisture still finds its way inside through ports, buttons, and speaker openings.
Why this happens
Water itself doesn't kill electronics. Corrosion, which develops afterward, is what does. Minerals and salts dissolved in water—especially seawater or tap water—settle on the circuit boards, oxidize contacts, and gradually short-circuit the paths. This process can take anywhere from a few hours to several weeks.
We often have people bring in an iPhone 13 that fell into a bathtub three days ago. The owner says: everything was working fine, and then the screen went dark and won't turn on anymore. In those three days, corrosion reached critical elements on the board, and the phone failed.
Another common issue: the battery starts to degrade very quickly—you charge it to 100%, and two hours later it's at 20%. Water damages the power management chip or the battery itself, causing it to lose capacity rapidly.
What you can do yourself
A few things that actually help in the early stages.
- Turn off the phone immediately. If it's on, turn it off. Operating electronics under power corrode much faster.
- Remove the SIM card. The tray is one of the most open entry points for moisture.
- Do not plug it in to charge. Seriously. Charging a wet phone accelerates the destruction.
- Dry it in a warm place. Place the phone in a dry, warm area—near a radiator, but not directly against it. The bag of rice trick is a myth; it doesn't pull moisture out of internal boards. Give it 24–48 hours.
- Do not use a hair dryer. Hot air will melt the adhesive and push water into other areas of the board.
If the phone works after drying, don't let your guard down. Symptoms can return in a week or two.
When you need a technician
There are signs that mean you shouldn't wait.
- The screen flickers, shows double images, or has lines
- Sound or microphone is not working
- Face ID has stopped working
- The phone heats up without being under load
- The battery holds a charge significantly worse than before the water exposure
- The phone turns off by itself even when charged
- The touch sensor responds intermittently
We had a case: an iPhone 12 Pro was brought in, and the owner had dropped it in the sea two weeks prior. The phone worked, but the battery would drain from 80% to zero overnight. We opened it up—the board was covered in white salt residue almost everywhere. Ultrasonic cleaning and a battery replacement brought the phone back to life. If they had come in sooner, it would have been cheaper and easier.
