Here is a common scenario: you're sitting in a group chat, you haven't left, but your iPhone suddenly says "You left the conversation." And it happens again and again. Other participants see it too — it gets awkward. This most often happens in mixed groups where some people are on iPhone and others are on Android, and the chat runs via SMS, MMS, or RCS.

Messages usually continue to arrive, and you can still reply. But the repetitive notification is confusing. We get complaints about this at our service center quite often — especially after iOS updates or when a new participant with an Android device is added to the chat.

Why this happens

There is no single specific reason. Most often, the culprit is RCS — a relatively new messaging protocol that replaced SMS. Apple added support for it in iOS 18, and since then, glitches have periodically occurred in mixed chats: the iPhone incorrectly processes a group member's status and "thinks" you have left. Less often, the problem lies in a failed iMessage number registration or a temporary mobile connection glitch.

What to try yourself

1. Restart your iPhone

It sounds cliché, but it works. Press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons, wait for the power-off slider, turn it off, and turn it back on. A simple reset often fixes temporary glitches in the Messages app.

2. Check for iOS updates

Apple regularly patches messenger bugs through updates. Go to Settings — General — Software Update. If there is a new version available, install it. We had a case where a client with an iPhone 14 Pro saw this problem disappear immediately after updating from iOS 18.1 to 18.2.

3. Toggle RCS

This is the most frequent fix that helps. Go to Settings — Apps — Messages — RCS Messaging. Turn off RCS, wait about 30 seconds, and turn it back on. If it didn't work the first time, turn off RCS, restart your iPhone, and only then turn it back on.

4. Check MMS and group messaging settings

In the same Settings — Apps — Messages menu, make sure that MMS Messaging, Group Messaging, and Send as SMS are turned on. Without MMS, an iPhone simply cannot work properly in mixed group chats.

5. Re-register your number in iMessage

Go to Settings — Apps — Messages — Send & Receive. Find your phone number and uncheck it. Restart your iPhone. Go back and check the box again. Wait a couple of minutes for the activation to complete, and check the chat.

6. Sign out of Apple ID and sign back in

If your iPhone, iPad, and Mac are not syncing conversations well, signing out of your account helps. Settings — your name at the top — Sign Out. After restarting, sign back in. Don't forget to enable Messages in iCloud if you were using that option.

7. Reset your mobile connection

Sometimes it's a matter of the number registration with the carrier. Go to Settings — Cellular, select your line, and turn it off. Restart your iPhone, turn the line back on. Give it about three minutes to connect and check.
